an update
Todd and Penguin has an update (of sorts) today. I uploaded a "best of" comic from 2006 because I haven't finished organizing my office and my computer and scanner are still sitting in a pile of wires. Good thing, too, because I am pretty unhappy with the comic I drew and need to redraw it completely.

In related news, both Todd and Penguin AND Taking Up Space will return with its unhappy comics for unhappy people next week.

The phone
A new Todd and Penguin today. If you're wondering what commercial Penguin is talking about, you can check it out here. Unfortunately, I ran out of time before I could draw a Taking Up Space comic, which is a shame, because I spent several hours on Friday plotting the future of that comic. I was really psyched to get to it, but Todd and Penguin comes first, so long as it has the most readers. If you missed the most recent TUS, it touched on a rather popular (ie, overdone) news topic.

Sorry that I missed TWO updates last week. Balancing work and family life has been difficult of late. I know it's a sucky thing to keep telling people hey, 'sorry I couldn't update.' Sucky and unprofessional. But right now Baby Wright is going through his Needy Stage and is much more demanding of our time than he has been in the past.

Balancing the comic and home life is difficult when you aren't doing this professionally. Particularly when people expect professionalism from you. And I am a workaholic who always tries to bring professionalism to everything I do, however, when this is not the job that pays the bills, it's got to be the first thing set aside when obligations come up. My goal is to have this be my main career, then I can afford to devote the proper amount of time to do it 7 days a week.

I'm not complaining about family time, though. I enjoy watching Baby Wright learn new things.

On Valentines Day he stood up by himself for the first time. Now (at 11 months old) he is starting to walk around the house! He started with a few steps at a time, then he would fall back on his but. Within a week or so, he began taking 4, then 8 steps. Now, he is taking as many as 20 steps before falling down. However, he is determined, and pops right back up!

Crawling is still his preferred method of travel, though, if he is in a hurry. Sometimes, he will start to stand, then decide instead to do a crab crawl, with his hands outstretched and his but in the air. It's a funny site.

Most funny though, is something which began last weekend.

My dad called and I handed the phone to Baby Wright to see his reaction.

He smiled, seemingly recognizing grandpa's voice. He didn't talk back or anything, he just kinda' looked at the phone.

Then when I hung up, he wanted the phone back. I handed it to him, and he lifted it to the side of his face (though it was upside down) and he began talking into it! Well, blabbing, as he doesn't speak words yet.

My wife and I were laughing so hard. And of course, he smiled. He knows when he's made you laugh, and will try to repeat whatever he did. I realized he was a little comedian when he was about 6 months old or so and my wife and I were shopping and he was in his car seat inside the shopping cart. He made a weird face which we'd never seen before and my wife started cracking up. He immediately did it again and again.

Eventually, I took the phone away so he wouldn't poke himself with the antenna stub (or call China). Then he picked up his remote (we gave him his own remote - without batteries- so he can be like daddy) and he put the remote up to his face like it was a phone and began talking into it! Then, during the week, he would simply hold his hand up to his face pretending he had a phone (or a remote!) and say "bab babababa."

Here's a pic. And before anyone thinks I let my son walk around like Mr. McMessyFace, I don't. His face and clothes are not usually that messy. I swear, your honor! He'd just finished eating when my dad called and it was close to bath time.

However, he IS normally holding a sock, or some other item. He likes to walk around while holding two items (one in each hand) whenever possible. Socks are a favorite for either hands or mouth. Give him two socks and he'll be content for an hour.

The new old and some pearls to consider
Like I mentioned in my previous post, I will be taking some time off from Todd and Penguin while I help get the house ready for our baby that's on the way. One week into my hiatus, I found myself doodling rather than working... but it wasn't the good natured Penguin comic. It was my dark child, Taking Up Space.

Thanks to Stephan Pastis of Pearls Before Swine, for bringing Taking Up Space back.

You see, while I had heard of the comic, I'd not really read it until maybe a month ago or so, following an interview I read with Pastis, where he seemed like a really cool guy. He also spoke of how he met Peanuts creator, Charles Schulz, which is an inspirational sort of story. So I checked out his comic and I love it! For one, it is doing something that I have wanted to do for the longest time - it blends dark with cute in a way that works well AND is syndicated.

When I first started Taking Up Space in 2002, it was borne of my desire to do something edgier, darker, something that allowed me to express my darker take on things. The humor, centering on things like death, is much more in line with my day-to-day sense of humor, while Todd and Penguin is probably the G-rated Dave. While I was aiming for dark and edgy, I couldn't keep cute out of the comic (enter Alexander, the hapless rabbit).

I love Taking Up Space. It was my first published work, too, in the Stanford Daily. However, I couldn't get Penguin out of my head, and had only time to draw one comic. I chose Penguin and put Taking Up Space back in the closet.

I take it out from time to time, turn it in my hands, maybe rework it a bit, and attempt to bring it back into the light. However, Penguin always calls, like the annoying cookie-starved avian he is and Taking Up Space always goes back into the closet.

In a perfect world, I could combine Todd and Penguin AND Taking Up Space. However, I didn't know how that would sit with longtime Todd and Penguin readers.

Now, after buying the first Pearls Before Swine treasury on Friday, I find myself dusting the comic off again and contemplating some way to bring the Todd and Penguin characters into Taking Up Space. It would indeed be the best of both worlds.

There are some barriers which I have to consider before making the leap, but Todd and Penguin could soon become Taking Up Space, featuring Todd and Penguin.

Speaking of Penguin, during my hiatus, I am posting the very first horribly drawn comics from November 2000 on the site. Some of you may recall that I lost the Nov. 2000-March 2001 comics when KeenSpace crashed back in 2002. I thought they were lost forever, but they have been found and should be somewhat interesting for 95% of my readers who weren't around back in 2002.

Wow.
Lately, I have been VERY frustrated with my drawing, or lack of drawing ability. I have struggled to draw better comics than I've done lately. I've also been struggling to find out which comic I should devote more of my energies to. Todd and Penguin, Girl and Monster, or Taking Up Space.

Part of me would love to take some time off and just concentrate on getting better and figure out what I want to do.

Tonight, while checking out other sites, I stumbled on an artist who amazed me. Mélanie Delon, a french artist who paints digitally, using nothing but a sylus and Photoshop, and creates some very beautiful stuff. Here's the kicker, she's only been doing it for a year.
While you're at it, check out her DeviantArt page here.

I stumbled on this site, via the Lines and Colors blog.

Lastly, I can't wait to see Pan's Labyrinth. In case you haven't seen a preview, check out the trailer at the official site. It looks beautiful!

An update of sorts
I've gotten quite a bit of email this week (some which I still need to respond to) asking where Todd and Penguin and Girl and Monster are.

This has been a busier week than usual at the paper. I worked a few late late nights on a story which I can't go into detail about. So, the comic is the first to suffer.

I wish it weren't the case, believe me. I would love to have more time to draw the comics. In an ideal world, I would be syndicated and making enough to focus on just the comics.

But alas, this is not an ideal world.

All week I've been contemplating Todd and Penguin and Taking Up Space and mulling over the possibility of combining them into one comic. It would give me a chance to be more topical and darker yet I could still keep the sweet stuff.

I could alienate Todd and Penguin fans by doing so.

9 out of 10 people I know prefer Taking Up Space. However, if you look at readership, Taking Up Space doesn't have nearly the numbers Todd and Penguin has. Though, given that Todd and Penguin is more established and publishes more regularly, readership numbers might not be an accurate guage of what is more popular.

Feel free to weigh in here or email me your thoughts.

Confusion
I'm facing a crisis over Girl and Monster. I'm not happy with the comic yet. It's been two months and I still don't like what I'm seeing. I put a lot (over two years) of planning time into the comic, so I'm kinda' surprised I'm not liking it more than I am. I hope once the intitial storyline is over, and it gets into a regular groove, I'll like it more.

To be honest, the more I draw Girl and Monster, the more I want to start Taking Up Space again. Which brings me to the same problem that keeps rearing its head... Too many ideas, not nearly enough time.

If only I could combine all the comics into one. I know I can't do that with Girl and Monster, but... maybe, I could combine Todd and Penguin and Taking Up Space?

I dunno'.

Speaking of Todd and Penguin, today's is based on my own cat, Charlie.

Well, I'm off. Back to work at the paper tomorrow.

I'm also a cartoonist, how most of you know me, who draws Todd and Penguin, Taking Up Space and the occasional other titles, featured on KeenSpot.com. I'm married (sorry, all you ladies interested in overweight guys who spend too much time drawing) and have a one year old son and two cats. Three of the above mentioned poop way too much!
